South Sea Islands Noni Fruit Extract Relieves Pain and Rejuvenates Cells

South Sea Islanders Have Used Noni Fruit for Hundreds of Years

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) has been used medicinally for centuries by South Pacific Islanders for cell rejuvenation, as an immune system booster and an analgesic. Traditional uses of noni and noni juice include:

  • Infections

  • Respiratory Problems

  • Colds

  • Digestive Problems

  • Parasites

  • Menstrual Cramps

  • Joint Pain

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Blood Sugar Irregularities

  • Kidney and Bladder Problems

More recently, in the United States, noni juice as well as other noni preparations have been sold and users proclaim a variety of benefits including increased energy and sounder sleep. Although some varieties are milder than others, pure noni juice is so unpleasant that most people would not drink it. In commercial noni juice preparations, other fruit juices must be added to make the flavor more acceptable. Concentrated noni extract in capsule form offers a less expensive and more convenient alternative, without the need for additional flavoring agents.

Noni Contains Precursors for Xeronine

Xeronine, a relatively small alkaloid identified by Dr. R.M. Heinicke of the University of Hawaii, occurs in practically all healthy cells of plants, animals and microorganisms. After first isolating xeronine from the pineapple plant, Heinicke used the same technique with noni fruit. The technique worked and the yields were excellent. While noni actually contains only small amounts of free xeronine, it also contains the xeronine precursor, proxeronine, as well as the enzyme needed for conversion of proxeronine to xeronine.(1)

The action of xeronine at the cellular level is not clearly understood; however, Heinicke believes that its primary function is to regulate the rigidity and shape of specific proteins. Since these proteins have different functions, noni’s beneficial effects may be seen in a wide variety of conditions throughout the body.(1)

Basically, if symptoms are a result of insufficient xeronine, supplying sufficient xeronine can alleviate those symptoms. The results achieved with noni will vary with each individual, depending upon which tissues have suboptimal levels of xeronine.(1)

Certain proteins are inert forms of enzymes which may require xeronine to become active. Others may become potential receptor sites for hormones when xeronine is supplied.(1)

Still other proteins form pores through membranes in the intestines, blood vessels and other body organs. Absorbing xeronine on these proteins changes the shape of pores and, thus, affects the passage of molecules through those membranes.(1) This could allow better nutrient absorption and more effective disposal of waste material from diseased or damaged cells.

Traditional Uses of Noni Validated by Research

Analgesic Effects of Noni

Noni users who suffered from chronic back pain, arthritis and other painful conditions attest to the analgesic effects of noni. In a study which included various experiments on mice treated with noni extract, the extract was shown to be non-toxic and it did show significant, dose related, central analgesic activity. The researchers concluded, "These findings validate the traditional analgesic properties of this plant."(2)

Noni Activates the Immune System

In another animal study, mice were injected with active Lewis Lung Carcinoma (LLC) cells. Untreated mice died from tumor growth in 9 to 12 days. Those given noni had a 105% to 123% increase in life span with 9 of the 22 mice surviving for over 50 days. The researchers concluded that, while the noni did not "kill" the cancer cells, it "seems to act indirectly by enhancing the host immune system involving macrophages and/or lymphocytes."(3)

In a Japanese study, researchers tested the effect of over 500 extracts from tropical plants on the K-RAS-NRK cell (a precursor to certain types of cancer). Another compound from noni was found to inhibit RAS function. The same compound, damnacanthal, has also been found to inhibit the Epstein-Barr Virus early-antigen activation. Among the 500 extracts tested, noni was found to be most effective for inhibiting RAS function.(4)

Many patients who have used noni also report reduced susceptibility to colds and flu; however, no clinical trials have been done.

Recommended Use

According to Dr. Heinicke, if noni is taken with food or on a full stomach, it will have very little beneficial action. The pepsin and acid in the stomach will destroy the enzyme that reacts with proxeronine to form xeronine. He recommends taking noni 1/2 hour before breakfast. At that time it will pass rapidly through the stomach and into the intestines where the enzyme can be activated.(1)

Dr. Heinicke lists a number of conditions which noni might favorably affect, with the qualifying statement, "some types but not other types". His list includes:

  • Arthritis

  • Atherosclerosis

  • Gastric Ulcers

  • Digestive Problems

  • Sprains

  • Menstrual Cramps

  • Injuries

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Mental Depression

  • Blood Vessel Problems

  • Senility

  • Pain Relief

  • Addiction

  • And Many Others
