Magnesium — The Missing Key Mineral

Magnesium and Your Health

Magnesium is involved in almost every bodily function, participating in more than 50 biochemical reactions. Magnesium is vital to enzyme activity. A deficiency interferes with the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses, causing irritability and nervousness.

Functions of Magnesium

Muscle contraction and muscle relaxation (both heart and skeletal muscle). Reduces muscle spasm and regulating blood clotting. In addition, magnesium is required for the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the "power cell" on which the body depends to perform all its physical, mental and biochemical work.(1)

MAGNESIUM AND YOUR HEART

  • Atherosclerosis
    The development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) was prevented by increasing the amount of dietary magnesium fourfold.(2)

  • Congestive Heart Failure

Autopsies performed on the hearts of individuals who died from congestive heart failure reveal changes similar to those seen in animals fed a magnesium deficient diet.(3) Heart disease itself causes a loss of magnesium from the heart muscle, which in turn further exacerbates the disease. In one study, patients with cardiomyopathy had 65 per cent less magnesium in their heart muscles than did healthy individuals.(4)

  • Arrhythmias
    Cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm abnormalities) have been treated with magnesium both orally and by injection with much success. A life-threatening arrhythmia known as torsades de pointes has been successfully treated with magnesium.(5)

  • Angina
    The chest pain that often occurs in heart patients during exertion or stress is called angina. Many treatments have been tried for this common condition. In 1958 a South African physician reported that an appreciable number of angina patients had been helped with magnesium therapy. Sometimes in a dramatic and almost unbelievable manner.(6)

  • Serum Cholesterol

Cholesterol is found in the bloodstream in several different forms. HDL, high density lipoprotein, has been termed "good cholesterol". In one study, magnesium supplements were given to patients with elevated cholesterol and low HDL concentrations. Each patient received 400 mg. of magnesium daily for an average of 118 days. The average total cholesterol level fell from 297 to 257 milligrams per deciliter, while HDL cholesterol increased from 35.2 to 46.7 mg/dl. Both of these changes were statistically significant and would be expected to reduce cardiovascular risk.(7) From England a most recent study was done on 2,316 patients suspected of suffering a heart attack. In that study, the four-week mortality rate was 24 percent lower in the magnesium group than in the placebo group

Magnesium and Other Health Problems

  • Fatigue
    Fatigue or tiredness is a common problem affecting more than half of the people who visit the doctor. Conventional medicine has little to offer. A French scientist named Laborit formulated the hypothesis that fatigue is sometimes caused by inefficient energy production within the cells. He said studies suggested potassium and magnesium were ideal in relieving tiredness or fatigue. (Also see product #851 C Aspa Scorb)

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

CFS is more severe than the usual type of fatigue that people experience. Whatever the cause of CFS, magnesium therapy has the potential to relieve the symptoms. Magnesium levels were significantly lower in the red blood cells of patients with CFS.

  • Diabetes
    More than ten million Americans suffer from diabetes. Magnesium deficiency appears to be extremely common among diabetics. Several have shown that serum magnesium is lower in diabetics than in healthy individuals.(8)

  • Asthma
    Asthma is caused by spasms in the muscles surrounding the bronchi (small airways in the lungs). Asthma is frequently associated with a magnesium deficiency. It was shown as early as 1940 that acute asthma attacks, even severe ones, could be aborted by administering magnesium injections. Oral supplements may be increased when asthma symptoms become excessive. Magnesium acts as a natural tranquilizer.

  • Osteoporosis
    Osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones, develops in about 30 percent of American women after the time of menopause. Most doctors focus on calcium supplements. One of the most important components of any osteoporosis program is magnesium. As much as 50 percent of all the magnesium in the body is in the bones. In bone density studies an astounding 11 percent increase in bone mass was possible due to a higher-than-normal amount of magnesium.

Precautions

In general magnesium supplements are quite safe. Magnesium, for some individuals may have a laxative effect when taken in large doses. Begin with smaller doses until larger doses may be tolerated.
