The importance of healthy liver function to the body's well-being cannot be over emphasized. The liver is responsible for detoxifying the system (blood) of bacterial and mineral poisons and for excretion, modification or absorption of dyes and drugs. It deaminates proteins, destroys uric acid, stores glycogen and it produces bile and cholesterol. It is here that urea, serum albumin, fibrinogen, prothrombin, ketone bodies and conjugated glucuronides occur.

The liver possesses the ability to perform a tremendous number of functions while retaining the power to regenerate itself. It is not surprising that liver disease, no matter what the cause, upsets one or more facets of carbohydrate, protein, lipid, bile and/or drug metabolism.

Over the years, researchers have found raw liver, taken orally, to be of therapeutic value in the treatment of a number of conditions including:

• Pernicious anemia and chronic leukemia (not the acute type).

• Hypoglycemia and diabetes.

• Elevated blood toxins and resulting allergies and skin disorders.

• Elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

• Elevated portal system blood pressure and resulting varicosities and hemorrhoids.

• Tissue regeneration following liver damage by hepatitis, alcoholism or other causes.

• Menopausal hot flashes and hormonal imbalances related to the hepatic role in hormone metabolism.

• Abnormal blood biochemical levels - SGPT, BUN, GGPT, monocytes and direct Bilirubin.

Not so well known is the use of raw liver in controlling diabetes. The following is a quote from an article by H. Blotner and W.P. Murphey, M.D.'s, published in JAMA, Vol. 92, page 1332.

"A study of the effect of liver feeding on the blood sugar indicates that, whereas previously liver has been regarded as an unsuitable article of food for diabetic patients, because of its glycogen content, it is now known to have a beneficial effect on the blood sugar of these patients.

Four patients with diabetes taking liver daily or from three to five times a week have been observed with repeated blood sugar determinations for approximately one year. . . it was found that the blood sugar has remained at a constantly lower level than previous to liver therapy.

These observations suggest that liver contains a blood sugar reducing substance active when taken by mouth, nontoxic, and with an effect on the blood sugar concentration similar to that obtained with insulin.

It is difficult to estimate the quantity of liver that will replace a known amount of insulin, but we feel that 180 gm. of liver will have an effect on the blood sugar of certain diabetic patients equal to that of from 10 to 15 units of insulin."

Another study conducted by B.H. Ershoff using laboratory rats, showed that the oral administration of liver improved endurance of the animals by eight times. This was demonstrated by forcing the rats to swim in large containers of water until exhausted. After resting these animals and including liver in their diets, they were able to swim eight times longer before exhaustion.

The rationale for use of glandular tissue concentrates is based on a simple and universal concept "like heals like". In other words, if an organ or gland in the body is functioning poorly, consumption of healthy cells from those glands or concentrates of those cells may normalize the function of that gland.

The active factors lie in the water-soluble fraction of glandular tissues, especially in the various peptides, polypeptides, proteins and enzymes.

Even though much of this material, when taken orally, is denatured and hydrolyzed by the action of gastric juices, pepsin and various pancreatic proteolytic enzymes, research has shown that varying amounts of this material survive gastrointestinal passage and are taken up intact via the enteric circulation. This research has also demonstrated that many of these peptide materials are so potent that even in microgram quantities, they can have a profound physiological effect on their target organs. In addition, many of these proteinaceous materials exert their effect primarily on the organ which produces them or on a closely related tissue. Thus, it is not difficult to see how glandular therapy can have remarkable healthful and preventive effects on all of our metabolic functions.
