| Herbal/Nutrient Formulas for Mood Support
Sexual Exhaustion • Lack of Libido
Herbal Complex and
Vital Nutrients Combined to Provide Effective Mood Support
Herbal-F Complex
and
Herbal-M Complex are synergistic combinations of herbs and vital
nutrients which provide effective support in cases of sexual exhaustion
or lack of libido. Although some of their ingredients, particularly
damiana, maca, tribulus terrestris , muira puama and green oats, are
reputed to have true aphrodisiac properties, other important nutrients
and herbs are used to alleviate conditions such as fatigue, stress,
anxiety and depression which can inhibit sexual interest, performance
and/or enjoyment.
Anxiety and Stress - The adrenal glands are composed of two parts.
Under stress the medulla produces catecholamines, one of which is
adrenaline, responsible for the fight-or-flight response. The cortex
produces the sex hormones responsible for libido. If stress is chronic
so that the medulla must continually pump the body with catecholamines,
the production of androgens from the cortex may be neglected and sexual
desire dampened.(1) Both formulas include adaptogenic herbs
such as Siberian ginseng and ashwaghanda to help the body deal with
stress.
Depression and Fatigue - Depression is a broad
term for a host of unpleasant feelings, including emotional numbness,
lack of energy and motivation, feeling like a failure and feeling
undesirable. These feelings frequently show up in middle-aged people who
begin to feel that they are "over-the-hill". Both formulas
contain the hormone DHEA which, in addition to being used to produce
other hormones, can boost energy and improve psychological well-being.(2)
In addition, these mood support formulas include various nutrients which
are necessary for energy production.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii)
Although not related to ginseng, maca has been called
Peruvian ginseng because, like ginseng, the plant is reported to
increase strength, energy, stamina, libido and sexual function.(3)
Animals fed maca show increased energy, stamina, sexual activity, semen
and sperm count. While no formal studies are available on human sexual
response, doctors report positive effects on both ovarian function in
women and erectile function in men.(4)
Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
Eleutherosides are the chemical components responsible
for the adaptogenic properties of Siberian ginseng. They appear to act
on the adrenal glands, helping to prevent adrenal hypertrophy and excess
corticosteroid production in response to stress. They also reduce the
exhaustion phase of the stress response and return the adrenals to
normal function more quickly.(5)
Ashwagandha Extract (Withania somnifera)
Herbalists also classify the Indian herb ashwagandha
as an adaptogen. Like ginseng, it increases the body’s ability to
withstand stress of all types and is said to improve physical energy,
strengthen immunity and increase sexual capacity. It has been suggested
for both male and female infertility.(8)
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
Because it increases blood flow, ginkgo is beneficial
in two ways. Increased blood flow to the genitals heightens sensitivity.
Increased blood flow to the brain helps relieve depression.(7)
Ginkgo may be effective in cases of erectile dysfunction due to arterial
insufficiency.(18)
Forskolin Extract (Coleus Forskohlii)
The phytonutrient forskolin has the unique ability to
activate adenylate cyclase, the enzyme involved in production of cyclic
adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a significant agent in energy
production. Cyclic AMP is responsible for the intracellular mediation of
hormonal effects on various cellular processes. Forskolin also relaxes
smooth muscle tissue.(8)
Tylophora Extract (Tylophora indica)
Tylophora extract, commonly used for bronchial
asthma, is added to these formulas for its muscle relaxant effect and
for its stimulatory effect on the adrenal cortex. In tests with
tylophora extract, both adrenal weight and plasma steroid levels
increased.(9)
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
DHEA, produced by the adrenal glands, has been dubbed
the "mother of all hormones" because the body uses it to
produce the male and female sex hormones testosterone, estrogen and
progesterone, as well as corticosterone. DHEA levels decline with age
and falling levels of DHEA are closely associated with a number of
age-related diseases and disabilities. When taking DHEA, 82% of women
and 67% of men scored higher on tests rating their ability to cope with
stress, quality of sleep and basic well-being.(10)
Zinc
Adequate zinc levels are essential for hormonal
activity and reproductive health, as well as for normal physiological
function in both men and women. In adult males, the testes and prostate
have particularly high concentrations of zinc. The sites where male
hormones attach to cells (androgen receptors) require zinc in order to
function. Zinc deficiency substantially reduces testosterone levels,
sperm production, muscle endurance and may also reduce the life span of
ejaculated sperm.(11)
Glandular Concentrates
For glandular support, Herbal Arouse-F
contains ovarian substance and Herbal Arouse- M contains orchic
substance. These are added for growth, balance and repair factors and to
act as carriers for the other ingredients to their target glands.
Glandulars are not hormones, but they may activate the gland to produce
hormones. The point of glandular therapy is to normalize the affected
gland or tissue, not to stimulate it.
Bioperine®
Bioperine, an extract of black pepper, is a
thermonutrient added to many nutritional formulas to enhance nutrient
absorption.

Especially for Women...
Herbal -F Complex
contains nutrients and herbs of particular importance to women.
Damiana (Turnera aphrodisiaca)
As a "sexuality tonic" for women, damiana
stimulates muscular contractions of the intestinal tract and brings
oxygen to the genital area. It is used as an energy tonic, aphrodisiac
and remedy for sexual and hormonal problems.(6)
Vitamin B-6
Vitamin B-6 plays a major role in making proteins,
hormones and neurotransmitters. Mild deficiency is common...90% of women
are found to have diets deficient in B-6.(12) In addition,
antidepressants, estrogen replacement and oral contraceptives may
increase the need for this vitamin.(6) Since B-6 increases
the bioavailability of magnesium, the two are often taken together.(13)
Magnesium
Magnesium is important in the production and transfer
of energy, in muscle contraction and relaxation, in nerve conduction, in
protein synthesis and in many biochemical reactions as a cofactor to
enzymes. Magnesium is also thought to dilate the blood vessels and has
been useful in relieving premenstural syndrome (PMS) and menstural
cramps.(14)
Especially for Men...
Herbal-M Complex
contains nutrients and herbs of particular importance to men.
L-Arginine
By enhancing nitric oxide production and subsequent
synthesis of cyclic GMP, the amino acid arginine enlarges blood vessels
in the genitals that can lead to enhanced sensation and penile erection.
Arginine is given to prize race horses at stud to boost the frequency of
their sexual encounters and to improve the quality of their sperm.(11)
L-Methionine
Aging men sometimes convert testosterone to estrogen.
One report showed that the estrogen levels of the average 54-year-old
man are higher than that of the average 59-year- old woman. Estrogen
competes with testosterone for the same cellular receptor sites.(11)
The essential amino acid, methionine, promotes the excretion of
estrogen.(6)
Tribulus Terrestris (Zygophyllaceae)
The saponins in tribulus are purported to enhance
testosterone levels by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) and possibly
unbound or free, biologically active testosterone. LH is the pituitary
hormone that signals natural testosterone production. Some of the
effects noticed are increased libido, sperm production and motility.(15)
Muira puama (Ptychopetalum unicatum)
In a study of 262 men complaining of lack of sexual
desire or inability to attain or maintain erection, after two weeks of
treatment with muira puama, 62% with loss of libido rated the herb as
having a dynamic effect, while 52% with erectile dysfunction rated the
treatment as beneficial. Muira puama is most effective in cases with the
least psychosomatic involvement. Of 26 men diagnosed with common sexual
asthenia without noticeable signs of psychosomatic disorder the herb was
effective for asthenia in 100% of the cases, for lack of libido in 85%
and for inability to obtain erection in 90%.(11)
Green Oat Extract (Avena sativa)
Avena sativa
was listed in German Pharmacopoeia for well over 200 years ago as a
powerful aphrodisiac. Studies show that this extract of green oats
functions by freeing up testosterone,(17) which becomes
increasingly bound to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) as a person
ages. Bound testosterone is not available to cell receptor sites where
it is needed to initiate sex stimulating centers in the brain.(11)
Selenium
Twelve different selenium-containing proteins have
been identified in the testes. Two of these are structurally important
in sperm. In animal studies, severe selenium deficiency in rats led to a
60% reduction in testes weight and selenium deficiency is known to
produce infertility in farm animals.(19)
Manganese
Manganese is used in energy production and is
required for reproduction.(5) Deficiency may lead to
testicular degeneration.(19)
